Cast a Line, Toss a Disc, Breathe Deep

Browns Point Park in Hewitt, NJ delivers lakeside catfishing, one of New Jersey's oldest disc golf courses, and shaded picnic spots.

About Us

Brown's Point juts out into the water at the edge of Hewitt, NJ, and the park that bears its name has been drawing West Milford locals for generations. The shoreline slopes gently down to the lake, giving anglers a natural casting platform where catfish have been running for decades. On a quiet weekday morning, you might have the whole point to yourself.

What surprises most first-time visitors is the disc golf course, one of the earliest layouts ever installed in New Jersey. The baskets are old-school metal, the kind that clank satisfyingly when you sink a putt. The course zigzags through the terrain in a way that feels unconventional until you realize the elevation changes and tree lines make every hole a genuine puzzle.

The park sits at a 4.5-star rating across 70 reviews, and the honest feedback from those reviews tells the real story: this is a place that rewards people who come prepared with a fishing rod, a disc, or a picnic blanket. Bring your own gear, find a shaded flat spot under the canopy near the water, and let the afternoon slow down.

What We Offer

Catfishing access along the sloped shoreline remains the park's oldest draw. The point creates a natural funnel where the water deepens quickly, and patient anglers have been pulling catfish from this spot for as long as anyone in West Milford can remember. A basic rod-and-reel setup and a bucket of bait are all you need.

The disc golf course is a legitimate destination for players across northern New Jersey. The layout uses the park's natural grade and timber to create a course that rewards shot-shaping over raw distance. Beginners can walk it casually; experienced players will find enough challenge in the tight fairways to come back and try again.

Beyond fishing and disc golf, Browns Point Park offers open green space and shaded picnic areas perfect for a low-key afternoon with family or friends. The park is free and open to the public, making it one of the more accessible outdoor escapes in the Hewitt area.

"Terrible. What happened to this place? I grew up in West Milford. Browns point was a must for cat fishing and I always took my girlfriend here because at one time it was so beautiful. The playground is gone as well. It was a great spot for children to play. I took my little girl here for a picnic because I was in the area. Just shocked. Another great childhood memory ruined. West Milford never disappoints smh"

"Great little Park with one of the first disc golf courses in New Jersey. The baskets are a little old school but it's cool. The layout is a little weird because of the way it zigzags, but it's a fun little selection of some technical and then some open stuff. Watch out for poison ivy because it is everywhere around here. There's one porta potty."

"Small park looks to be more of a point of land with a sloping downhill grade to the water's edge. There is actually a Frisbee golf course here! We found a perfect spot to have our picnic under some shady trees. A pleasant surprise."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an entry fee to use Browns Point Park?

No. Browns Point Park is a free, publicly accessible park. You can fish, play disc golf, or picnic without paying an admission fee.

What kind of fish can I catch at Browns Point?

Catfishing is the primary draw at Brown's Point. The sloping shoreline drops into deeper water quickly, which creates good holding spots for catfish. A standard bottom-fishing setup with cut bait or chicken liver works well here.

Does the park have an actual disc golf course?

Yes. Browns Point Park has one of the earliest disc golf courses installed in New Jersey. The baskets are classic old-school metal. The layout zigzags through the terrain using natural elevation changes and trees, making it more interesting than a flat course.

Are there picnic tables or covered areas at the park?

There are shaded spots with room to spread out near the water. Visitors have found good flat ground under tree canopy for picnics. The setting is informal, so bringing a blanket or folding chairs is a good idea.

Is Browns Point Park good for kids?

It can be a great family outing. Disc golf is easy for kids to try, and the waterfront setting is scenic. Some reviews note the park has seen wear over the years, so come with realistic expectations for facilities rather than a polished playground.

Where exactly is Browns Point Park located?

The park is located at Brown's Point in Hewitt, NJ 07421, in the West Milford area of Passaic County, New Jersey. It sits on a point of land extending toward the water, which gives it that distinctive sloping shoreline.

Do I need a fishing license to fish at Browns Point?

Yes. New Jersey state fishing license requirements apply at Browns Point Park. Anyone 16 and older needs a valid NJ freshwater fishing license. You can purchase one through the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife website before your visit.
